A&D ANNUAL 2022

Isobelle Lowe

Isobelle Lowe’s work uses technological failure and video games to explore digital space as a contemporary expression of immaterial reality through which spiritual concepts and mortality are understood. This serves to critique technology’s status as a force of social progress by emphasising its inherent purpose of overcoming physical limitation. Her work 'Leave Without' depicts the apocalypse in The Sims 2, borrowing tropes from popular culture and religious imagery to emphasise the ongoing narratives of reckoning in popular culture. This undermines the apocalypse’s significance by positioning it in a digital context where its loss and permanence cannot be contextualised.
