In Australian schools, one student in every classroom is a young carer. Despite this prevalence, many do not self-identify as a young carer and therefore cannot obtain government support or assistance. Greater access to earlier intervention leads to better physical, mental and educational results for young carers. This research proposes an accessible two-way communication resource kit for identifying and supporting young carers in the classroom, with components for both teachers and students. Through design, 'Helping the Helpers' seeks to raise awareness about the challenges that young carers face, increase access to support, and improve their outcomes in an education context.
