A&D ANNUAL 2022
Isabel Hesse
‘The Nest’ is cast in a storybook world with the central character Bel creating a world capturing and replicating feelings in a visual language, emphasised through colour and staging. ‘The Nest’ manifests the idea of rawness. Audiences will feel a natural sense of incompleteness, as the character Bel is encased in a shell, then at the end emerges in an arc of resilience. As a poetic visualisation, ‘The Nest’ describes an isolated moment outside the passage of time. It leaves viewers with a sense of alienation, of its childish playfulness through the storytelling mode but yet acknowledges some harsh realities. What is then created from an aura of being stuck, dormant but not quite caged, is a progression and drive towards resilience.
