A&D ANNUAL 2022
James Baldwin
James Baldwin’s work focuses on his affinity to landscape utilising his home in the Southern Highlands as the subject. These works focus on land management and how we interact with the land, documenting interactions through aerial photography. Utilising aerial photography as source imagery, his work combines AI (Artificial Intelligence) with the base photos, commenting on the increasing presence of technology within the landscape. The works uncover our footprint on the land, looking at the process implemented to increase production and output. The AI provides a unique and unpredictable interpretation of the land gesturing to the unpredictability of the future determined by our current practices and involvement on the land. These works collectively represent different aspects of production, and highlight the extreme changes in climate the landscape experiences. Focusing on the idea of feast and famine, the work’s contrasting colours of fiery oranges to deep greens and blue’s highlight the extreme shift from bushfires to floods.
