As an artist, we are always at risk of criticism from the public when we express ourselves through our art. Through our artworks, we expose a small part of ourselves to be judged, criticised, condemned, attacked, praised, complimented, or admired. Arjav Malla’s work is an attempt to understand how personal identity is bound deep within his own subconscious, expressing a much more significant and core part of himself to the world.
\nThere is a well-known Japanese proverb that reads: \u201cYou have three faces. The first face, you show to the world. The second face, you show to your close friends and family. The third face, you never show anyone\u201d. Individuals are layered and we exhibit different parts of ourselves to different groups of people. Through his practice, Arjav unveils the facades and guises he puts on, to express not a false interpretation of himself, but his true nature, his true identity. The images portrayed are an abstraction of the fears and dreads within his subconscious that binds him from expressing his true identity.
