A&D ANNUAL 2021

Jiayi Chen

Jiayi Chen is a multidisciplinary designer working primarily in textiles and object design. Drawing on personal experiences of her cross-cultural identity, Jiayi’s design style is often influenced by cultural traditions and customs, and the basis of her practice is informed by highly iterative processes and experimental methods. Continuously passionate about traditional craftsmanship and material investigation, her work focuses on tactility and detail, as well as visuals and aesthetics. By creating sensory experiences, Jiayi aims to take audiences on a journey that resonates physically, and not just conceptually. She aims to create a sense of connection and evoke feelings with others, regardless of whether similar experiences have been shared, to allow wider audiences to appreciate these traditions. Working closely with elements of nature, Jiayi also aims to maintain a sustainable practice.
