A&D ANNUAL 2021

Jiaqi (Kassi) Chu

Jiaqi (Kassi) Chu’s project focuses on hair as a medium for the transferral of power existing in individuals. Through a restricted and repetitive process of brushing, pulling, collecting, sorting and labelling her own hair at the same time daily, Jiaqi investigates an archive of the fluctuating regulation of the artist’s life and body. The project interrogates how hair has been capitalised under the masking of other functions. Rather than organising the hair with conjoining objects that would have been marked, Jiaqi uses tape to segregate and label the individual locks. By presenting hair as a specimen in this way, this project identifies the value of each single lock.
