A&D ANNUAL 2021

Joshua Nabarro

‘Cleaning up Sydney’ addresses the growing problem of waste management in Sydney through actor-network theory and an ethnographic study. This project suggests that lack of knowledge and awareness around what happens to our waste is a prime cause of the waste problem. This research project questions if people are made more aware and given a convenient, incentivised way to properly dispose of their waste, would they be more inclined to do so? The final prototypes for this project are a graphics-based campaign using a 'Trash-for-Cash' app, biodegradable posters featuring QR codes, infographics, and a short statement explaining the app. The app is designed to both inform users about where their rubbish goes, what happens to it and, most importantly, how to correctly sort it. The app also includes a rubbish collection feature enabling users to organise a time to have their rubbish picked up and subsequently earn money based on the amount collected. By using the app, users take the problem of waste management into their own hands to create a cleaner Sydney in the long-term.
