A&D ANNUAL 2020
Wendy Baird
Wendy Baird is a contemporary artist exploring themes of ephemerality, transience, memory and identity. Wendy’s recent work ‘Pose’ is a digital print with mixed media that reflects and contrasts the ‘selfie’ and the traditional self-portrait within the context of the tableau vivant (a living picture) and through the lens of the feminine. The work uses photography, painting and mixed media in a process that is interchangeable and uses layering to make a new whole – a process Wendy sees as not unlike taking a selfie. By focusing on the selfie as a form of self-representation, Wendy examines the ways young women portray themselves with selfies on social media which she perceives as a theatre for an online audience. Wendy graduated from Sydney College of the Arts in 2005 and has recently completed a Master of Art at UNSW Art & Design.
