A&D ANNUAL 2020
Madison Tong
In response to the excess of information brought on by the COVID-19 infodemic, ‘Trust me. I’m fake news’ is a guerrilla pop-up campaign that shifts attitudes around the ethical accountability of peer-to peer sharing on social media. While many interventions explore this issue within a digital space, Madison Tong’s work takes a more radical approach. Consisting of two parts, the project features both an urban environment sticker intervention and an online Facebook campaign. Based on the metaphor that misinformation is a virus, the project conveys the dangerous behaviours associated with misinformation and how this has shaped our perception of COVID-19. Borrowing techniques from design activism such as culture jamming and satire, the work challenges viewers to be more vigilant in their sharing habits.
