A&D ANNUAL 2020

Laura Kikirekov

Laura Kikirekov is a graphic and textile designer based in Sydney. Her research addresses the verbal and physical harassment women face in areas of Sydney particularly at night, and investigates how improved lighting and artistic premises in public spaces can reduce the likelihood of this occurring. Laura’s project ‘Weaving Women’s Safety into our Cities’ involves a series of participatory, large scale and illuminated urban weavings placed throughout Newtown and Atarmon. These interventions aim to not only reduce crime in Sydney, but enhance women’s sense of ownership and comfort in public space, as they navigate their way through the city.
