A&D ANNUAL 2020

Josephine Pereira

Josephine Pereira is a visual artist based in Sydney, Australia working with oil paint to represent the nude female figure. Josephine’s work ‘Found: Woman as Subject’ posits a critique of the male fetishised gaze that perceives the female subject as non-living objects. She seeks to dismantle these perceptions and reorient understandings of the female reproductive experience through illuminating historically censored representations of women’s pain. Through nude self-portraiture work and nude portraiture of women within her life, Josephine intends to offer a female driven discourse whereby women can see themselves and satisfy an intimate connection to art.
