Hosted within the social platform Instagram, 'Makeup for freedom' is a public profile providing a space for potentially vulnerable and affected individuals to express themselves creatively. Designed by Jamie Young, this forum aims to combat unrealistic beauty ideals portrayed by cosmetic brand marketing online. Stimulating essential conversation surrounding the potential negative mental health impacts resulted from harmful marketing, the page provides an outlet for self-expression as a celebration of individuality through makeup. As makeup is a core contributor to the imposing ideal of beauty online, redefining its use and effects for positivity is fundamental. Ethnography provides the core method for which the project can instigate design activism through self-reflection and cyclic participatory design using illustration. This core practice of illustration allows participants full control, providing a creative method to engage with.
