In Medias Res’ explores an experimental documentary format inspired by traditional documentary styles and techniques, as well as those of the contemporary ‘vlogging’ culture made popular on YouTube. Latin for ‘in the midst of things’, this film captures Amy’s reality, collating a record of her life and experiences throughout 2020. Guided by a self-imposed manifesto and limited by restrictions and regulations due to COVID-19, the portrayal of self arises questions of performativity and authenticity with constructed narrative in documentary film. This take on a self-reflexive, modern documentary encourages the audience to reframe the vlog as documentary, and to consider its consequences on artistic culture in contemporary new media.
